October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness of this complex disease. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Cameroon, accounting for 20.1% of all new cancer cases in 2020. It is also the leading cause of cancer death in women, with an estimated 2,108 deaths in the same year.
Alarmingly, breast cancer is becoming increasingly common in young women in Cameroon. In fact, a study published in 2015 found that the average age of diagnosis for breast cancer in Cameroon is 46.58 years, which is significantly younger than the average age of diagnosis in developed countries.
We chose to sensitize in schools this year because, breast cancer is often more aggressive in younger women. There are a number of reasons why it is important for young girls to know about breast cancer. First, early detection is key to successful treatment. By being aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, young girls can get screened early and receive treatment promptly if necessary.
This means that it is important for young women to be aware of the risk factors for breast cancer and to take steps to reduce their risk.
Finally, breast cancer can have a devastating impact on the lives of young women and their families. By educating young girls about breast cancer, we can help them to be prepared for the possibility of a diagnosis and to cope with the challenges that come with it.
